The Fringe Gets a Pass

April 3, 2011

Indeed, he would. In another society, that crazy Gainesville preacher would be held responsible for his actions – possibly even put to death for what is elsewhere considered a capital crime. In our society though, we know that there is no way to corral the crazies. The “fringes” of our society are protected by the same laws that make freedom accessible for all of us. Even if their actions directly result in the deaths of the innocent.

“South By”

March 5, 2011

“South By” – that’s how Debba Haupert (of Girlfriendology fame) referred to the South By Southwest (SxSW) Conference coming up next week in Austin, TX. As you may be able to see by the tile on my page, I am going this year too. And I am taking my daughter, a true digital native and [...]

Privacy? Schmrivacy!

March 4, 2011

Perhaps it is mid-Winter stir-crazieness setting in but I am a bit surprised at a resurgence of the “privacy issue” in social media. Let me back up a bit to reference a recent New Media Cincinnati second Saturday meet-up appropriately titled “Naked on the Web: How’s Your Privacy?” that featured a panel of social media [...]

Why does the GOP hate women?

February 28, 2011

I could be a Republican. I agree with much the party has to offer (in my modest, moderate way). But its continuing assault on the fair sex leaves me cold. I refer, of course, to efforts aimed at undermining and even eliminating family planning in the U.S.

Blissdom 2011

January 31, 2011

Some bits of the conference are just not my thing. But then there is a stirring keynote presentation, or an offline conversation over breakfast or in the hot tub (in a sleet storm) that makes the whole trip worthwhile. This is a powerful group of connected individuals who explore vulnerability daily. They poke at their wounds and demonstrate the courage to be imperfect. And a reader and contributor I am so grateful to be a part of that community.

What Price Freedom?

January 7, 2011

City Council member Jeff Berding – who works for the Bengals – was quoted in the article about the Freedom Center as saying he wouldn’t vote for the appropriation without proof that the museum can survive.
How we could wish that the same standard Jeff mentions be applied to the football franchise! Heck, for $40 million, I’d settle for a new Offensive Coordinator and call it even.

Sometimes size does matter

December 30, 2010

The holidays are wrapping up and I am deliriously pleased with a gift I gave to myself this year. This sleek MacBook Air should make my life, my blogging, digitally-connected-on-the-verge-of-obsession life so much simpler.

All the Men Presidents

December 5, 2010

I don’t believe it is a partisan issue to be solved with a soul searching selection process. Can we look dispassionately at our current political “leaders” and find someone who actually can lead?   Are we able to study and analyze their wrong turns, and right turns, to get at the essence of what good leadership is – what skill set is needed beyond winning an election?  The future of our democracy, I think, hangs in the answers we find. Until then, please tone down your shock and awe when the anointed one disappoints.

Cincinnati’s NURFC Adds World’s First Installation on Modern-Day Slavery and Human Trafficking

October 8, 2010

But even with the awareness that slavery exists today I was unprepared for the deeply felt sense of pity for childhood lost, for the sad eyes and heart wrenching stories of exploitation ripped from today’s headlines. As many as 12 to 14 million people worldwide forced to work against their will. Some in prostitution. Others in hard labor. It is uncomfortable. Disturbing.

Don’t Push Me

September 26, 2010

I spent part of the past week darting back and forth between the Digital Hub Cincinnati Non-Conference and my office – about a 5 city blocks between the two – just far enough to appreciate the distance on a 98 degree day. The Conference was great (with only a few exceptions) and I was glad to see people in real life with whom I communicate regularly via digital means. The most engaging session I attended was a keynote with Wendy Lea of Get Satisfaction. So much of marketing today seems to be directed at the “push” of information – particularly via email – it was refreshing to hear someone speak of the importance of the “pull.”
