“South By”

by Jeanne Bernish on March 5, 2011

“South By” – that’s how Debba Haupert (of Girlfriendology fame) referred to the South By Southwest (SxSW) Conference coming up next week in Austin, TX. As you may be able to see by the tile on my page, I am going this year too. And I am taking my daughter, a true digital native and SIMS-tastic interactive person in her own right, with me.

With this simple colloquialism Debba ushered in a host of possibilities – perhaps this conference was knowable, manageable, even doable for a not-so-youthful interactive geek like me. You see, I was starting to doubt my ability to run with the bacon-flavored lollipop crowd. The panels and core conversations were fascinating but did I really want to spend my day dashing around from session to session and my evening “connecting” at themed party venues? Probably not. So it was with no small relief that I read Brad King’s recent post:A South By Southwest Guide to Surviving the Nerdpocalypse Now I know to: follow @H_Forrest on Twitter (for all things SxSW Interactive); plan on attending Dorkbot and to not forget to visit the bats. Bars are optional and mostly to be avoided (especially with my daughter in tow). And from my dear friend Barb a note to hike the surrounding hill country to see if the bluebells are in bloom.
